Clutch City

Okur
Houston was nicknamed “Clutch City” after the Rockets won back-to-back championships in the mid 90’s.  But, it seems only right for them to relinquish that title to the Jazz.

A new study came out this week that listed the most clutch players (a player that is known for making baskets at the end of a game) in the league for the past five seasons (not including this new season).

They used a not so difficult formula to base their findings.  In short, it’s the players making the most shots (fg’s, 3’s, ft’s)  at the end of a game.

They defined a clutch situation as-being in the last five minutes of a game and the score within five points.

We all know that LeBron James and Kobe Bryant are considered the best players in the league.  But, there’s always one main distinction between the two- most people would raise their hand and shout “Kobe!” if you asked who they would like to shoot the last shot for their team.

But statistically is Kobe really the most clutch player in the league?  I’m happy to tell you that he didn’t even make the top 10.  I know, I was surprised too.

The Top 10      (TS%) (True Shooting %)

  1. Manu Ginobili -0.656
  2. Mehmet Okur-0.647
  3. Steve Nash-0.642
  4. Amare Stoudemire-0.633
  5. Chauncey Billups-0.631
  6. Carlos Boozer-0.627
  7. Shawn Marion-0.616
  8. Corey Maggette-0.615
  9. Kyle Korver-0.609
  10. Yao Ming-0.609

The Jazz have 3 players on the top 10 list.  Wow!  Memo really doesn’t surprise me because the Money Man can really light it up at the end of a game.  But I’m not going to lie, Booz coming in at #6 was a shocker.

In case you were wondering the five worst clutch shooters are:

Kirk Hinrich, Pau Gasol, Hedo Turkoglu, Al Harrington & Jameer Nelson

It got me thinking.  As a Jazz fan who would YOU want taking the last shot for the team?  Deron?  Memo?  Wes Matthews?

I’d have to say Memo.  He just loves the big moment and rarely disappoints me.

So Houston, how ’bout it…give us the name!

Awesome article. As a Jazz fan I have always wanted Memo taking the last shot. His all-star season he had so many clutch jumpers in so many games. The guy isn’t name Money for nothing.

Loved this! I’ve often wondered if they could do a study like this. D-Will is my love and I think I want him taking the last shot of a game but if not him then definitely Memo!

Memo for sure!! He isn’t the Money Man for nothing! Deron’s a very, very close second.

But leave the ball out of Korver’s hands down the stretch. He’s struggled to be the clutch guy in Utah.

Hey Matt, where did D-Will fit into that list. It seems like he can take over the end of a game quite often and hit some BIG shots.

I’m becoming a big fan of Wes Matthews, but I think it could be a little early adding his name as the game winning shooter. Although I do love his burst of energy from the top of the key into the paint.

Great post! I’d still prob go with Deron, but Memo is a close second.

D-Will. He can get to the hole or create space for a shot and he’s clutch

NIce article, Matt. I love Memo but, as I’m reading this, he just hit one of his infamous toe-on-the-line two-point shots against Sacramento. One day we’re going to lose a game by a point because Okur will nail a would-be game-tying three with that big foot of his over the line!

When it comes to being clutch I tend to go with what I see with my eyes. My eyes tell me that Kobe (love’m or hate’m) not making this list is ridiculous. My eyes also tell me what I saw in the 2009 playoffs from Hedo Turkoglu. To say he is one of the least clutch is also ridiculous. The problem with this list is it relies on raw data. If I were creating a list I would have it like this:

1) Kobe Bryant
2) Chauncey Billups
3) Mehmet Okur
4) Tony Paker
5) Lebron James
6) Brandon Roy
7) Dwayne Wade 8) Deron Williams
9) Jason Terry
10) Manu Ginobili

Gilbert Arenas, Ray Allen and Ben Gordon

Great blog Matt. I’m not a great stat fan but that was really interesting. I pretty much agree with the list except for our games I feel about 50/50 for Memo and DWill.. I do agree with the blogger that said Memo loves that attention and thrill of making that last shot so I may lean towards him. Since this is about the end of the game, has anyone else noticed how disgusted and poorly DWill seems to play at the end of the games? I don’t know if he is most disgusted with the refs (who really seem to call everything wrong where he is concerned), or the team as a whole, or some certain players, or himself? He looks disgusted, he misses easy shots, gives the ball away and seems to act like he wants out of the game. The game last night was fun, then went sad, then went pathetic and then turned exciting again but a little late.

Memo for sure. The guy is Money but I have to agree with James….dang it back that foot up a half inch

I couldn’t agree more with wanting Memo to take the last shot in a game. He has ice water flowing through his veins! Maybe we should just get him in a smaller shoe or something so he doesn’t stand on the line!
