Buzzer Beater? No Thanks.
Posted by Trevor Fuchs on January 09, 2010

If I had to pick one person to take a potential game winning/tying shot at the buzzer for the Jazz…I would probably pick the ESA usher from portal TT. It’s not that I believe the sweet, 5 foot, elderly woman has some sort of supernaturally accurate shot…but I don’t think the odds of a Jazz win are decreased significantly with her taking the shot. If she has the night off, or it is a road game, I would just find the most drunk fan in the crowd, blindfold him, stand him at center court, spin him around fifteen times and pass him the ball.
Ok…you got me…I’m joking. Or am I?
The Jazz are 0-3 so far this season when they are down by two or less points and have possession of the ball in the final seconds of the game. Deron Williams missed a potential game winning 3-pointer at the buzzer against the Wolves on December 14th, Ronnie Price missed a potential game winning jumper at the buzzer against the Thunder on December 31st, and now last night, CJ Miles had his potential game tying layup blocked at the buzzer against Memphis. Miles, who finished the game with 0 points on 0-7 shooting was probably as baffled as everyone else watching that he was put in with 5 seconds left.
In addition, although the Jazz eventually won in overtime, Paul Millsap missed a potential game-winning jumper at the buzzer in regulation against the Pistons on November 21st. That puts the Jazz at 0-4 for potential game winning shots at the buzzer for the season. To put it into perspective, Kobe Bryant has 3 game winning buzzer beaters by himself so far this season.
So, perhaps the usher or the drunk guy wouldn’t provide better odds, but they could be wildly entertaining to watch. Maybe I’m just lacking the desire to live life on the edge, but I’d rather watch the Jazz win comfortably by more than 20 points…and then drive home in my tank, slip into my bulletproof pajamas, and sleep soundly in my fall-proof bed in my room with padded walls and a rubber floor, nestled safely in my home with 10 locks on each door and a motion sensor alarm system.

A friend and I were texting throughout the Memphis game and during that final time out he says to me, “Who takes the final shot?” I said, “You’ve gotta go with Korver, he’s on tonight.” Then when I saw that CJ was checking in I quickly followed it with, “Anyone but CJ.” Then CJ ends up taking the last shot. Go figure.
Funny post Trevor!

Why would you put in CJ (lefty) to attack the right side of the hoop? If you wanted to go inside use Brewer, Millsap or AK. I wish Kover would have taken the shot, but remember the Laker playoff game? Kover passed up a wide open three to a trailing Memo like four feet behind the line. I wonder if Kover let Sloan into his head because you know he taking those shots in Philadelphia.

Korver is a chicken! You have to take that shot. Same thing happened in Game 6 of the series with LA two years ago. He had the ball, an open shot…and threw it to Memo.

Did anyone notice how much time was left on the clock when Marc Gasol swatted the ball out of bounds? The back board was finally surround by red game lights AFTER the ball crossed the out of bounds line. I think we should have gotten the ball underneath with 0.8 seconds to pull off a shot similar to what Derek Fisher did last year with the Lakers. (not that we would have made it, but I do believe we should have had the chance).
Also, wasn’t this the same CJ Miles that said the night before that he feels he can let it fly more freely when he has the opportunity to touch the ball more often (a slight jab at D-Will). Where was he on his 0-7 shooting while Deron was riding the pine in that game…..? Keep your comments to yourself CJ. One decent game doesn’t make you good enough to call out your team leader.

I would trust Korver for the game winner anyday. I wanted him to take that last shot in memphis soooo bad and was dumbfounded that Miles was even in during the last seconds of play, I mean hell even putting big Fes made more sense to try and get under the basket for an easy dunk.
Either way i am so glad that Korver is pretty much 100% and it appears his hand is on fire! If he maintains his knee and shot for the rest of the season it is going to help us so much.
You could tell that he has been frustrated being out for so long and wanted to come back with something to prove, and boy did he prove it.

Yeah, Korver has been on fire. CJ could have even kicked it back out to him for a shot rather than take on Gasol under the basket. Lots of teams do the draw and kick with plenty of success, probably could have worked in that situation. Oh well, they bounced back with a very impressive win against a tough Dallas team. Lets hope we see the same team tonight against Miami. GO JAZZ!
P.S. How long do you guys think Jerry will let CJ suck it up before he puts Matthews or Korver in the starting line-up? I was under the impression that CJ was on a pretty short leash.

I think that the only way Sloan was” in anyone’s head” was him telling them who was to go for the shot. If Sloan is “in the head” of Kyle while he makes all the 3s he has been making then I think he should stay there!!

LIke your post Trevor. I agree I hate close games this year. For whatever reason the Jazz can’t win at the buzzer!

Korver did need to take that shot. I knew CJ hadn’t hit a shot all game and I don’t think Kyle had missed, eve when contested. The kid’s gotta man up and shoot that ball.

@Linda
How do you explain the significant drop in Kyle’s shooting from Philadelphia to Utah? I think it’s coaching, Sloan frowns on outside shooting. I don’t recall Kyle being hesitant at any point of the game in Philadelphia.

BLAKE… Driving home from the game Monday night we stopped in Tremonton for “keep awake coffee”. While there we read the newspapers from some previous days. They were interviewing Sloan and he was stating that it would be good to have Korver back so he could shoot more 3 shots and therefore help us deal with the zone defense because it opens up the middle. That doesn’t sound to me like someone who doesn’t believe in 3 pointers. He may have been slow in feeling that way but that interview made me feel like he likes the now (if they know what they are doinjg and make the majority of the shots). Wish you could find the article so you could read it. Linda

I agree Linda. While Sloan frowning on 3’s in years past may have been the case, I do sense some sort of adaptation to his coaching style. In my opinion, this Jazz team shoots more 3’s than any before. I may be wrong, but it sure seems like it to me. I know they’re still in the bottom half of the league in 3’s attempted, but does anyone know if they’ve made any improvement over the last few years?

Hey we won on a buzzer-beater last night. Sweet.

I have to make a retraction. Buzzer beater? Yes please! The ending to the Cavs game last night was amazing. Price, Korver and Gaines all made super clutch shots…..especially Gaines, of course.

Did you think Korver might take that three in the corner at the end of the Memphis game? Or would Jerry have yanked him out for the last three seconds if he missed?
